I was looking for a way to display my son’s lego creations with something old that fits in with our home like wood crates. My original thought was doing shelves at the top of the walls all the way around the room. Our ceilings are so low that I was worried this would make them seem even lower. Plus I didn’t really want to see lego from every angle in his room so that’s how I decided to display LEGO with old crates.
LEGO Display-Installing the Wood Crates
Some of these crates were given to us, but some I found at an antique market for fairly cheap ($5-10). So this can be a budget friendly project. Plus if you had some extra wood scraps you could build some pretty easily. I actually ended up building some crates for our pantry which I’m hoping to share here soon. I needed such specific sizes that it was the most budget friendly and aesthetically pleasing way to go about it.
So first once we had the crates we screwed the crates to the wall and called it a day. That seemed like enough display area, but he soon outgrew that. When I realized he needed more display area and I didn’t want it to take up more space. I figured out that I could easily add shelves to the existing crates.
Once the shelves were cut to size I painted them a pretty grey/blue that I mixed together from my existing paint stash. Painting them before attaching them to the crates was really ideal. I didn’t want to get paint on the crates. I love how old they look and the wood tones help to warm up the space and give it some character.
Also if you are wondering about this lego table. The top of the table was originally hung from a wall in the play room. Let me know if you want more information on how we built that. I could probably pull a post together.
Anyway we found that it wasn’t getting much use in the playroom. It was kind of in an awkward spot behind one of our French doors. So I thought of bringing it up here as a table for him to build on, and it’s been working great for that.
Boys Room-Ongoing Projects
At some point I may add a couple more crates but for now this is working and I love how they look. In the meantime I have been working on different curtains for this room. He has had these long dark blue curtains that started to feel a little drab in a boys room.
I’ve been trying to have more fun with the elements in the kids room. Seems like a fitting place to add more color and pattern. So I found a blue gingham in my stash of fabric that I kind of pinned up for now. I added a layer of canvas (from a canvas drop cloth) behind it to help block the sunlight more. I had some curtain hanging clips that I just clipped to the gingham and canvas fabric.
So basically all free things. I wanted to try it out to make sure I liked it before I went to the effort of sewing them all together. Spoiler alert I love them. I love that they are short, and are a fun color and pattern that fit in with the vibe of the room and house. So one of these rainy and cooler days I will be washing that fabric and sewing it together.
I’m working on other content for future posts, so be looking for that in the next few weeks. In the meantime if you are looking for more design inspiration and tips you can find that here.
