This diy farmhouse sink cabinet came together so quickly. As soon as we bought this old farmhouse I knew I wanted a farmhouse style sink. We scored this one from Ikea. (Here’s a link to a similar one here, they no longer carry this particular one) I think it was the first thing we bought for this home.
We stored it for a bit until we were ready to install it, and by we I mean my husband and father in law. They made this look so easy. I wanted to share this for anyone else in a similar boat. Hopefully you can get some inspiration, and feel like this is less intimidating than it may seem.

DIY Farmhouse Sink Cabinet How It Started
So as you can see in the picture above we started with a very standard kitchen sink cabinet. So they went ahead and trimmed the bits of the counter top and cabinet in the way of the farmhouse sink. For our sink the weight of it rests on the back and sides where it sits on top of the counter. So the cabinet isn’t bearing any weight.
I knew I wanted to use the doors from the cabinet that was above the refrigerator originally on this modified sink base. We took the cabinet above the refrigerator down and removed the doors. The cabinets were the same width so this was an easy swap from the shorter cabinet to this sink cabinet.
So with those door heights in mind they figured out what to cut the face frame down to. Then they installed the board that lays horizontally on that face frame. This is a board from a big box hardware store. Nothing too intimidating.
The kitchen sink was actually wider than the sink cabinet so they added thin white wood boards to the sides of the sink cabinet to fill that gap. There was this space between the sink and that horizontal piece that was unappealing and look unfinished. So I cut a thin white wood board down and mitered the edges to create this trim piece to cover the gap.
With all that done they were able to stain it all to match our cabinets at the time. So it didn’t look so bad while we were deciding on paint colors for the cabinets.

Sink Base Before & After
This farmhouse sink is one of my favorite parts of our kitchen. An old farmhouse needs a farmhouse sink in my humble opinion. I think the sink base turned out so nice. I’m biased but I think they did a great job.
That horizontal board seemed like it was missing something. I had the perfect solution on hand and added the metal detail shown above. I painted it to match our vent hood and coffee bar area. It was a piece I had for awhile. It actually came with hooks to hang on it, but I think it works perfectly here as a little accent piece.
