I’ve had these 3 easy kind of fall diy home projects I’ve wanted to do for awhile now, and I’m so happy with how they turned out. All 3 were kind of flips or things that I made over so they did not cost much if anything to do. I did not get a before picture of the pumpkins though unfortunately. I am trying to get better at that cause it is fun to see the before and after.
First Easy Fall Home DIY Project: Dried Flower Pumpkins
Again I forgot to take a before picture of these ceramic pumpkins, but when they were given to me they were a brown color. Nothing wrong with brown it’s just not usually a color that I am drawn to. So I knew for awhile that I wanted to repaint these. The shape of them is great.
Luckily I did not repaint them right away though. I think they would have just been plain and white if I had. This year however I happened to see someone post a picture of real white pumpkins they had added dried flowers to. They added them to the bottom of the pumpkins though, and I thought the dried flowers might be pretty on top where they could really shine.
This was such an easy project. First I spray painted the pumpkins a cream color, and allowed them to dry. This took a few coats of spray paint. Then I was able to use this very old mod podge that has somehow not dried up yet, and painted some on to the pumpkin where I wanted to add flowers or leaves (I started with the leaves/ferns and then added the flowers on top). Then I would stick the dried floral on to the pumpkin, and apply a top coat of the mod podge. It doesn’t look all that pretty at first because the mod podge is white when applied but it does dry clear.
I put the ceramic pumpkins on our dining room table with some of the real pumpkins from my garden and our beeswax candles. I love all the fun color from the dried flowers on these pumpkins. I’m so glad they didn’t end up being plain white pumpkins.
Second Easy Fall Home DIY Project: Gas Can Jack O Lantern
I saw someone do something similar to this, and I thought it was such a fun way to use these old gas cans as decor. This one was given to me, and it’s been sitting in the barn waiting to be transformed.
I ended up using our vinyl cutter to make the face for this jack o lantern. This made for such a fast project, I can’t believe it took me so long to get to it. I would love to do a couple more at some point. I am on the look out for more old gas cans like this.
If you do not have a vinyl cutter you could easily paint a face if you wanted to. You could even create a stencil out of a thinner cardboard or card stock to help.
I thought I was going to use matte black vinyl for this project but I couldn’t find any which happened to be a good thing. I love how the gold ended up looking. It’s really eye catching in the sunlight, and I think the black would have blended in too much.
Third Easy Fall Home DIY Project: Dried Flower Door Decor
Again I had this thrifted metal piece for an embarrassingly long time. I knew I wanted to freshen it up with some paint. The hard part was deciding what color to go with.
I ended up going with this gold medal color from valspar that I had left over from my girls’ room. Then I dry brushed black paint on top to help distress it a little bit, and make the design stand out.
I am really happy with how it turned out after all this time. Unfortunately, I did not like it on our door though. I think there were too many straight lines. I think our door looks better with a wreath on it to help break up all the square angles.
It looks really good hanging on a wall or peg rack so we will see where it ends up. For now I’m just really enjoying the gold color with some of the dried weeds from our yard.
